Balanced intake and ridge exhaust
Exhaust creates little useful flow when lower intake is blocked. Painted-over soffit vents, insulation packed at the eave, narrow overhangs, and closed rafter bays can restrict air. Baffles may be needed to keep insulation from covering the path between soffit and attic.
Too much exhaust without defined intake can pull air from ceiling gaps, attic stairs, recessed fixtures, or other roof vents. That air may carry indoor moisture into the attic. Rhino considers the intake source rather than judging ventilation from the number of products visible on the roof.
Vent calculations use attic area and the rated open area of the specific products, with code and system requirements applied to the building. A vent's outside width does not equal its airflow. Screens, filters, baffles, and installation affect the actual open path.
Lower intake
Soffit or other approved openings need a clear route past insulation into the attic.
Upper exhaust
Ridge vent length and rated open area are matched to the attic and available intake.
Attic connection
Partitions, fire blocking, cathedral slopes, additions, and separate attics can divide airflow.
Indoor moisture
Bath ducts, air leaks, humidity, and insulation issues may need work outside the roof vent.
